Test: Full Amp Musical Fidelity AMS 35i

As the acronym ‘AMS’ for Antony Michaelson signature, you expect something very special with the AMS 35i (7500 euro), a personal technology statement of the founder – and gets it also. Michaelson returns to his roots to a certain extent, because as the very first amp, which he sold under the sign of “musical fidelity”, also the AMS 35i is a wholly-owned class A design.

  2. Data sheet

By the output transistors run constantly with maximum quiescent current, class A avoids the inevitable otherwise with push-pull designs, ugly-sounding distortion of the transition. That’s about as you would in the car, to prevent gas exchange-jerking, constantly full throttle and dose the speed with clutch and brake. With the slight difference that the hot amps in contrast does not cause the duration Screamer to social prominence and correct interpretation and conscientious building are also long-term stability and can be operated even reasonably economical.

The latter goes only with a certain self-restraint in the service offering: for every Watt into 8-ohm performance potential, you must constantly about the value of ten burn – here it’s appropriate 291W.

An extremely solid case of milled aluminium plates and after Maß manufactured heatsinks ensures a uniform removal of excess capacity – the Musical Fidelity AMS 35i is one of the few amplifiers which run at least theoretically even cooler the louder they play. Due to the massive rear the input Sockets bolted down with her and the powerful speaker output terminals bear witness to permissive use of materials.

As a side effect of the interpretation of class A power amplifier and power supply of the AMS 35i have got very stable: the 35 watts into 8 Ohms double in 4Ω to 69 and 2Ω again approximately at 124 W (AK: 50)

The abstruse dimensioned, carved kilo heavy from the full remote control once except is everything to the Musical Fidelity AMS 35i directly the function owed – and by the way beautifully decorated: just nice to know that the small plate is made of stainless steel and still shines in ten years. It is even more beautiful hand over the silky, delete – especially if it’s around Nice and warm after a half hour-like finish of the huge housing to classic cameras.

It is the most beautiful but to listen with the AMS 35i. You can hear the tremendous control of the Musical Fidelity despite its modest power exerts over the speakers, first on a fabulously sophisticated bass. Better said: a world of the bass, by the growl of a Fender precision bass up to sing a fretless, pressure subsonischer dub bass lines up to the oak springs an old jazz double bass. Eskimos have 50 words for snow, Bedouin 100 for sand. The Musical Fidelity AMS 35i seems to know – an electronic Duden of Thunder 1000 for bass.

Contrary to expectations, the midrange is not plushy and warm, but remains very contoured in all colours, well-balanced, sometimes almost slim. What doesn’t bother because the amp in everyone, absolutely every situation remains especially one: effortless. This casualness, but never careless acting, the AMS 35i has obviously cribbed his Amplifiers cousin AMS 50.

And although he has virtually no technical similarities with tube-equipped precursors sister Musical Fidelity Primo, takes wider CinemaScope-like figure from her a generous loan in the sound of the amplifier. It will improve this distance and naturalness even with an Accuphase E-560 – he also incidentally a class-A amp – only to an infinitesimal. What doesn’t change the fact that the Musical Fidelity AMS 35i the sublime feeling produced quickly and above all permanently to have a perfect amplifier on.
