It is called cope with the supply or food pantry. The concept is linked to the verb abastar, which refers to supplying those elements that are needed for subsistence.
Supplies are also groceries or provisions. By extension, in some countries the store for the sale of food products is called supply.
The notion of market of supply or plaza de abasto (they can also be named in the plural: see Digopaul) refers to the large-scale venue where vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses and other food products are sold. Some of these spaces also offer flowers, crafts and various items that go beyond food.
The Mercado de Abasto de Buenos Aires, for example, was an establishment that operated between the end of the 19th century and 1984 in the Argentine capital. In that place food was sold wholesale. Since 1998, Abasto Shopping has been operating in the building, a shopping center that has four floors and numerous restaurants and shops.
It should be noted that the area of the City of Buenos Aires where Abasto Shopping is located is known as Abasto: there, between the neighborhoods of Once and Balvanera, the singer and actor Carlos Gardel grew up.
The Central de Abasto of Mexico City, located in the Federal District, is another venue for the commercialization of food. It occupies an area of more than 300 hectares and receives more than 300,000 buyers a day.
In Spain, finally, spaces such as the supply markets of Jerez, Algeciras, Burriana, Aranjuez and Toledo, among others, can be mentioned.
That without forgetting either the Plaza de Abastos de Écija (Seville), which dates from the 19th century (1844), or the Mercado de Abastos de Vitoria. The latter was built in the 1970s and was and is the central axis of the commercial life of the city.
It is interesting to refer to the fact that in the world of cinema and television there are also different products that use the term in question. This would be the case, for example, of the film “Mercado de abasto”, which is of Argentine origin and which was released in 1955.
It is directed by Lucas Demare, starring Pepe Arias and Tita Merello and brings us closer to a love triangle. And it is that two very different men are in love with the same woman.
On the other hand, we have to mention the television series “Central de abasto”, 2008, which aired in Mexico and which took precisely the Central de Abasto in the capital of this country. And is that some of his characters worked there.
In the same way, we cannot overlook the existence that, colloquially and frequently, we make use of an expression that uses the term that concerns us. We are referring to “supply”, which is used as a synonym for “giving enough.”
An example of this meaning could be the following: “Sorry, I can’t take it anymore. Someone has to help me finish the project because I cannot cope, there are many tasks”.
